Amanda B. Vernon is a writer, teacher, and academic working at the intersection of nineteenth-century literature and theology. Her work has been published in Victorian Review and Victorians: A Journal of Culture and Literature. She is currently writing her first book, Reading with the Trinity: Theology and Literary Form in George MacDonald, which will be published by Manchester University Press in 2026.
Amanda has been reading and re-reading Buechner since a friend gave her a copy of Secrets in the Dark: A Life in Sermons ten years ago. His down-to-earth style and the honesty with which he writes about the life of faith have always appealed to her. In Buechner she finds a writer who refuses to shy away from the uncertainties, difficulties, and complexities of belief, but who also wonderfully captures the moments of recognition and revelation that signal the presence of God.
