Dr. Nathan Kilpatrick is an associate professor of English and Catholic Studies at the University of Mary in Bismarck, ND. There, he serves as the Director of the Gregorian Scholars Honors Program and the faculty mentor for the Fraternity of Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati.
His research focuses on a wide range of contemporary religious writers, with publications on Flannery O’Connor, Barbara Kingsolver, Cormac McCarthy, Andre Dubus, Alice McDermott, and J.F. Powers. He is working on book-length studies of contemporary American Catholic novelists and the aesthetics of John Paul II.
He first discovered Fredrick Buechner as a freshman in college, and Buechner’s presentation of the many paradoxes of faith and reality provided the motivation for his religious conversion, his love of humor, and his respect for a writer brave enough to shoot shafts into the dark, hopeful they’ll strike the mark and offer a prayer unto God.
