The Buechner Review [‘26-‘27]:

THE 100TH BIRTHDAY EDITION

An annual publication, delivered in monthly installments, dedicated to the life, work, themes, and theology of the Revd Frederick Buechner.

In celebration of the 100th birthday of the Revd Frederick Buechner, it is my privilege to introduce the fourth edition of The Buechner Review, 2026-27.

Carl Frederick Buechner was born on July 11, 1926, in New York City. In ninety-six years of life he touched the lives of millions. Publicly, he is revered for his novels, memoirs, sermons, and essays. Privately, he is remembered by a small host of individuals who encountered him face-to-face in classrooms, lecture halls, sanctuaries, or at his home in Vermont. To this number, we should also add those who corresponded with him: a quiet and hidden readership, in whom the Buechner Center will take a special interest this year (more on this to come).

Characteristically, this edition of the Review is eclectic. Continuing its encouragement of Buechner Studies — an area of literary studies that will only continue to grow over the next 100 years — it features a number of writers who take an academic interest in Buechner’s work. As usual, these are joined by several leading creative writers and public thinkers for whom Buechner’s work has proved influential. Extending an item introduced last year, this edition also includes a small number of student authors, selected from the winners of Frederick Buechner Writing Competitions held at seminaries, colleges, and universities around the world.

Lastly, in honour of Buechner and his faithful readers, we are delighted to introduce a new feature to this year’s edition — a special “readers write” issue, scheduled for publication on his 100th birthday: Saturday, July 11.

Look out for a new article on the second Tuesday of each month, posted here on our website, and shared across our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts. If you would prefer to have each article sent to your email, you can sign up here.

Happy reading — and Happy Birthday, Frederick Buechner!
