Sophfronia Scott is the author of multiple works of fiction and nonfiction, including the novel Wild, Beautiful, and Free and The Seeker and the Monk: Everyday Conversations with Thomas Merton. Her work often explores questions of faith, identity, and the inner life. She has an essay in the forthcoming anthology Holy the Words: The Craft of Spiritual Writing (Broadleaf Books, April 2027).
Sophfronia loves reading Buechner because, as she wrote in the January ‘26 issue of Buechner Review, in thinking about recognizing God’s presence in the world, “he and I are kin. We speak the same language.” As such, she wholeheartedly agrees with his words from The Remarkable Ordinary: how to stop, look, and listen to life:
It seems to me almost before the Bible says anything else, it is saying that—how important it is to be alive and to pay attention to being alive, pay attention to each other, pay attention to God as he moves and as he speaks. Pay attention to where life or God has tried to take you.
