Grace Hamman received her doctorate in English from Duke University in 2019, where she specialized in Middle English poetry and contemplative writing. She is the author of the award-winning Ask of Old Paths: Medieval Virtues & Vices for a Whole & Holy Life (Zondervan Reflective, 2025), which received Christianity Today’s 2025 Book of the Year in Spiritual Formation, and is a finalist for the Dallas Willard Book Award. She also wrote Jesus through Medieval Eyes: Beholding Christ with the Artists, Mystics, and Theologians of the Middle Ages (Zondervan Reflective, 2023). Dr. Hamman widely lectures and writes on medieval thought and thinkers and what they can teach us today. Her work has been published in popular and academic outlets, including Christianity Today, Plough Quarterly, and The Journal of Medieval and Early Modern Studies.
Dr. Hamman lives in the suburbs of Denver, Colorado with her husband and their three children. When not knee-deep in fourteenth-century poetry, she can be found hiking the Rockies, drinking tea, gardening somewhat haphazardly, and reading novels.
I first discovered Frederick Buechner in college, when I read Wishful Thinking: A Theological ABC and then shortly after, Godric. To me, both Buechner's fiction and nonfiction have always represented the perfect meeting between a certain crafty delight in words and an even deeper, fearful delight in the mystery and character of God. I strive for that same intersection in my work.
